HVAC insulation for an iconic place to live
BATTERSEA POWER STATION
The iconic Battersea Power Station is a land mark on the south bank of the river Thames close to Grosvenor Bridge. As a coal-fired power station, it supplied London with electricity from 1933 for 50 years. Designed by a team that included the famous architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (who also ‘fathered’ the famous red telephone booths), Battersea Power Station was one of the world’s largest red brick buildings and its cathedral-like structure became famous for its Art Deco interior fittings and decor. Today the site is being redeveloped to provide residential and office accommodation in the heart of London. Armacell was selected as the supplier of choice to supply the HVAC and piping insulation for the Battersea project.
Battersea Power Station, the eye-catching and iconic building, was neglected for decades after it was decommissioned in 1983. Decay set in, several redevelopment projects failed and in 2012 Battersea Power Station was put up for sale. Chelsea Football Club was reported to be considering a move to a new purpose-built stadium on the site, but in the end, a consortium of Malaysian investors got the nod for redevelopment. The fine architectural tradition continues, as Frank Gehry will be designing the eastern- and Norman Foster the western section of the site. For Phase 2 of the redevelopment project designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre multiple homes of varying size have been constructed along with a considerable amount of office, retail and event space. Battersea Power Station’s full redevelopment is scheduled to involve a total of seven phases.
Armacell’s AF/ArmaFlex® Class O Self Seal was chosen for Phase 2 of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment because of its superior performance parameters:
- Flexibility for fitting around pipe bends, pump and valve sets, etc.
- Fast installation with self-seal tubes
- Versatility in offering a combination of energy savings on hot water and condensation protection on cold water pipework
AF/ArmaFlex Class O Self Seal is the flexible insulation solution for reliable and continuous condensation control. Its unique microcell structure makes the product easy to install with no additional vapour barrier required. The combination of very low thermal conductivity and extremely high resistance to water vapour transmission prevents long-term energy losses and moisture ingress as well as reducing the risk of corrosion under insulation. The excellent fire performance makes it suitable for residential HVAC insulation.
An important factor in favour of Armacell's solutions is the BREEAM® Green Guide A rating ArmaFlex maintains. Our solution complies with the thickness requirements set out in the building regulations governing pipework in new residential buildings to achieve hot water energy savings and condensation protection.
LET’S SUM UP
- Flexible insulation solution for residential accommodation in iconic building
- Fast installation thanks to self-seal tubes
- Enhanced energy savings for hot-water piping
- Effective condensation protection for cold-water piping
