Frost Protection

The effective use of insulation will significantly reduce the rate of ice formation in a cold water pipe.

Hot water pipes may also require insulation for frost protection. Where pipes have been insulated for heat loss the thickness of insulation, particularly on small bore pipes, may not be sufficient for frost protection.

Thermal insulation for frost protection should comply with BS 5422 or 6700, as a minimum requirement.

Vapour Barrier

In BS 6700 there is a recommendation that insulation material used for frost protection should provide a vapour barrier with a permeance not greater than 0.05 g/(s.MN). Armaflex and Tubolit are closed cell materials which far exceed this requirement.
